La motivazione della giuria:
The book presents a very creative collaboration of two artists with very different styles, one very cartoony and one closer to fine illustration. A little girl wants her brother to tell her scary bedtime stories. He doesn’t succeed even after many tries, so she takes the lead with unexpected results. Each spread has a series of comic panels telling the story, often presented very humorously, and a page with beautiful and spooky illustrations depicting dragons, bats, man-eating plants, and other fantastic creatures. Ole Könnecke comics pages show the brother and sister interacting in a very natural and humorous manner, with the sister being very feisty; at the same time, Heidelbach’s illustrations evoke traditional fairy tale monsters, reminding Brothers Grimm’s scary tales. It is a good book for parents to read with their children at bedtime, encouraging both to create their own scary stories.

La motivazione della giuria:
A very special version of Hitchcock's Rear Window for children: a young girl breaks her leg and spends her time spying through binoculars on what is happening in her neighborhood. This is a chance for her to really understand the world and what goes on inside homes and families. The unique vertical format allows the author to often show overviews of entire buildings. In these very colorful pages, daily life is felt in all its vibrancy, showing the diversity of the world around her as well as many personal problems and so much loneliness. In the last four pages, all of which are written, Marina Sáez presents herself as a white cisgender woman who has two boyfriends, hairy armpits, and who occasionally falls in love with girls, and she engages with the story to address topics such as sexual orientation, patriarchal society, the lgtbqi+ community, and feminist thought. The story encourages conversation and serious discussion on these topics and more

La motivazione della giuria:
A powerful and very beautiful wordless tale about a toddler trying to find ways of seeing her great grandmother. The discovery of items trigger memories of togetherness, turning objects into actual passageways through time and space. A reflection on the isolation experienced during Covid-19 and the ways people found to connect through memories and imagination. The warm yellow colors in varying hues depict the protagonist’s feelings as she learns the importance of human connectivity, as warm as the colors of the book itself, which in turn warms the reader. This book transcends categories, but seems most apt for early readers to experience reading comics together with their parents or teachers, and learning to walk through the story.

La motivazione della giuria:
A cat who lives in solitude decides to leave his silent home to discover the world. His adventure becomes a reflection on the power of imagination: is he creating the world around him or imagining it?
With its simple and charming art, as well as an extremely humorous and playful story, this wordless book is very approachable to early readers. It begins with solemnity and gradually evolves into humor, showing one can be happy both alone and with friends.
An effortless introduction to the language of comics for early readers (and their parents).
