Books & Seeds is now a permanent BRAW category starting this year. Which were the criteria which determined the evaluation of the submitted works?
I adopted both educational and aesthetic criteria... New educational formulas are required.
Famine, agriculture, biodiversity, environment sustainability. They all stand as crucial topics in many areas of our planet. Do you believe books for young people tackling these matters are worth investing in to increase awareness from an early age?
In my opinion, investing in this type of publication is interesting, useful, and necessary. Food education is essential today for a proper health and diet awareness. In Italy and in the whole of Europe, there are numerous children overweight or troubled by obesity. In some areas of Italy, this is up to one third of thepopulation of certain age groups. This is contributing to the increase of such illnesses as Type B Diabetes. Food education has therefore a key role in the politics of prevention, and EU campaigns focusing on this subject are increasing. It’s well known that food education must have a wider focus and tackle other elements, from environment and sustainability, to agriculture and rural areas. In one of my recent TED talks I tackled the education of beauty, speaking of our country’s landscapes, which are often misrepresented for lack of knowledge.
In your opinion what’s the must-have publication dealing with food and natural living?
Michael Pollan’s “The Omnivore's Dilemma”, which is available in a youth edition too.
