Cakes are more than just desserts - they are symbols of culture, community, and connection. Peace of Cake brings together 22 illustrators from around the world to serve up their own artistic
slices of beauty - each one telling a story through the visual archetype of cake.
Cakes mark celebrations, bring people together, and sometimes even hold cherished memories. In Peace of Cake, 22 illustrators offer a feast for the eyes, inviting viewers to explore affinities and take a bite into a world of imagination, memories, and creativity.
Some cakes capture real moments and memories, while others are purely imaginative creations. There are wishful cakes, representing dreams and desires, and cakes that exist only in the artist’s mind—fantastical, playful, or surreal. Though each illustration is unique, many share a common ingredient—the joy of sharing food, the visual delight of an irresistible cake, and the childlike wonder that comes from something that looks delicious, smells inviting, and has its own story.
A cake that people eat together creates closeness, turning a simple moment into a mutual memory—one that lingers long after the last crumb is gone. Sometimes, that memory transforms into a story, retold and reshaped over time, just like the illustrations in this exhibition.
This project was born from an international group of professionals in children’s book illustration—illustrators, writers, and curators—who first met in Bratislava in October 2023 at the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava (BIB). Their gatherings were filled with conversation, laughter, and shared slices of cake. After returning to their home countries, they decided to stay connected and transform their shared experience into an illustrated project—a celebration of how food, art, and storytelling nourish both the imagination and the heart.
Each member of the Peace of Cake group invited illustrators from their country (and some beyond) to create a personal, meaningful, and imaginative cake – inspired by a real experience, a dream, or by pure creativity. The result? A diverse collection of cakes you can’t eat but will want to savour, each one filled with memories, emotions, and artistic flair.
We are honored to present this international “cake party” at the Bologna Book Fair and extend our gratitude to the Bologna team, especially Ms. Elena Pasoli, for welcoming this exhibition into the heart of the fair.
