What the jury said:
Themes of communication between roots, trees, the collaborative nature of life in the forest and the importance of ecosystems are expressed through poetic words and pacing, infused with vibrant images. The result is a fantastical interpretation of the forest through a unique and fluorescent colour palette. Dynamic compositions and expressive drawing technique combine to provide a fresh take on this subject. A magical and outstanding intersection of information and evocative storytelling for a picture book that crosses the boundaries of the award categories.

What the jury said:
Told from a child’s perspective, humour drives this narrative of a migratory journey of a tribe seeking a new life and a new place in the world. Community building and resilience shine through this charming, creative and original take on a migration story. Emblematic themes, such as separation from a loved one, are interwoven in a plot that describes a universal, unstoppable and deeply human experience: the journey, forced in this case, in search of a place in which to live well with loved ones and the right to a space to live in the world. The graphic and expressive use of black and white media illustrates the diverse characteristics of the travelling tribe. The imagery evolves into a colourful celebration of a new home and future.
