PUBLISHING ACTIVITY

LIELS UN MAZS is an independent, award-winning children’s book publisher founded in 2004, based in Riga, Latvia. Since the very beginning, our focus has been on publishing contemporary picture books and quality fiction created by the most talented Latvian writers and illustrators. We also publish a great deal of poetry for children, because we love the way poetry plays with language and invites children to play along with it. We publish books to develop children’s artistic and literary taste and to enrich their reading experience. The books published by “Liels un mazs” create new worlds through their language and visual imagery. The local – stories that we inherited from grandma and those we grew up with like mother’s milk – mixes with the distant and different, playing with boundaries. Our books combine the known with the unknown, to create connections stronger than those that we otherwise know in our daily lives. We also publish a list of thoughtfully selected translations from the best children’s authors, including Piret Raud, Kristin Roskifte, Barbro Lindgren, Ulf Stark, Sven Nordqvist, Maria Parr, Carll Cneut, Kitty Crowther, Janosch, André Letria, Jacques Vriens, Shaun Tan, Edward van de Vendel, Andri Snær Magnason, Romana Romanyshyn, Andriy Lesiv, and Kestutis Kasparavicius. In 2014, we successfully launched the sale of rights, and now our books have been translated into Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Swedish, and other languages. In 2022, we won the Bologna Prize for the Best Children's Publishers of the Year for Europe (BOP). The Laime's Children by Luize Pastore, illustrated by Evija Pintane, received the BRAW special jury prize, New Horizons 2022, and three more titles published by Liels un Mazs were chosen for the BRAW Amazing bookshelf exhibition. Liels un Mazs received the Excellence Award of Culture 2022 (Latvia) for a high-quality, socially active and internationally recognised performance in children's book publishing.
