Tales of EUkraine: Sharing Stories

HALL 29 MALL 1
BBPlus Theatre

Tales of EUkraine (TEUk) is an opportunity for European publishers to support their Ukrainian counterparts and to display their solidarity to the most vulnerable victims of the conflict by doing what they do best: publishing books. This project will bring together European and Ukrainian publishers to deliver bilingual children’s books to several communities hosting Ukrainian refugees, fostering integration and mutual understanding. TEUk has built a catalogue of Ukrainian children’s books available for publishers to acquire the rights to and publish in bilingual editions. The project partners will purchase the part of the print run to be distributed to displaced children and organise its distribution to the Ukrainian refugee communities, whilst publishers will be invited to promote the book to their national communities. TEUk will facilitate the integration of Ukrainian children in their host countries, increase the knowledge of Ukrainian culture across the Union, and support the Ukrainian publishing sector in a time of dire need. TEUk is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

How Artificial Intelligence Technology Can Change The Publishing Industry

HALL 29 MALL 1
BBPlus Theatre

In the field of education, edtech companies are competing to launch AI services. But is Artificial Intelligence able to write full-length novels? Not yet. However, AI can reverse this industry with ‘AI drawing platforms’ that change creative original sentences to imaginary paintings automatically. In this way books, turned into images, can become more accessible. This means that any talented storyteller could become a bookmaker and a publisher if they adapt their writing to the needs of these platforms. A new era full of opportunities is coming, let’s wait and see!

Digitalization and innovation in the Greek Publishing Sector

HALL 29 MALL 1
BBPlus Theatre

The Greek publishing industry has undergone a gradual digital transformation during the last decade. Composed of mostly family-owned, family-run businesses and facilitated by shifting leadership to younger generations, the Greek publishing industry quickly embraced social media and digital marketing as a key strategy for promotion and digital presence, though the market was more sluggish in adopting ebooks. The pandemic proved a catalyst for digital transformation, by considerably accelerating e-commerce adoption for publishers, booksellers and readers alike, by encouraging direct-to-consumer strategies for the publishers and by kindling the interest in audiobooks and podcasts. In just over a year an audiobook market was developed in Greece with a variety of platforms, business models and content. At the same time, publishers are redoubling their efforts in digital marketing, expanding their usage of newsletters, creating original content for promotion and committing more and more resources to TikTok. In this session, Michalis Kalamaras will provide an overview of the digital transformation of the publishing industry in Greece, including audiobooks, and will also highlight innovative projects focusing on reading in the browser, while Katerina Kris will talk about best practices in using social media for book promotion while emphasizing original content creation and community engagement in BookTok.

Censorship of Books: what is the state of children’s book banning around the world and what is being done?

Sala Bolero
Services Centre - Wing B

Censorship is an ancient practice. Whether it be Cato the Censor, or later Popes to blacklist certain books, the goal is always the same: to control, redact and censor, in other words, to stop disclosure. Censorship takes place in many sectors – the press, communications, politics and cinema. Totalitarian regimes exert strict controls. But why is there censorship in more democratic countries? And why, around the world, are some children’s books banned? Long-debated, this issue will be a discussion focus at Bologna Children’s Book Fair, following up on David Levithan’s troubling and visionary article in the New York Times of 23 September 2022 entitled Standing up to the new censorship. In his article, Levithan - America’s 11th most censored author according to PEN America - talks about how censorship today has become a tool used to attempt to deprive communities of their voices and erase their history. A panel of experts, including publishers and scholars from around the world, will give their views of the state of children’s book banning around the world and of what is being done.

International Kids Licensing Days. The New Frontiers of Entertainment

HALL 29 MALL 2
LICENSING CONFERENCE ROOM

The second day is devoted to the evolution of Entertainment. The big players in the toy industry have moved away from their core business to manage the evolution of their content in publishing and entertainment directly. In this session, international experts from the toy, publishing, animation, and entertainment sectors will discuss the growing interconnection of worlds that until recently seemed separate but are now all related.

The White Ravens Panel: International Children's Books about War and Displacement

HALL 30
Authors Café

Every year at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the International Youth Library (IYL) hosts an event about a current topic in international children’s and young adult literature. This year, the focus is on the representation of violent conflicts, war, persecution and flight in literature for young readers. How do the books tell their stories? How do authors and illustrators address these sensitive topics in texts and images and how do they convey such challenging and potentially traumatic content? Members of the IYL team will introduce a selection of remarkable titles from the current international children's book production that show different ways of approaching these questions.

Marc Boutavant, author, illustrator and cartoonist on the creation of his characters and the influences of his work. The discussion will touch on different examples and short stories of encounters. Whether it's Ariol, Mouk, Edmond or Chien pourri, his characters and images are full of appetite, roundness and colour. The illustrations are hilarious, full of details, gag situations and humour, and are a wonderful way of rendering both the serious and the burlesque. Marc Boutavant received the Grande Ourse 2022 award from the Salon du livre et de la presse jeunesse, in partnership with the French Institute.

Montessori teaching tool for math

Sala Ronda
Services Centre - Wing C

Innovative tools inspired by the pedagogical thought of Maria Montessori to encourage children to memorize combinations in basic calculation, preparing the calculation in mind and laying the foundations for subsequent more advanced learning. It presents the realization of abstract concepts in an engaging and fun way: through their manipulation, the free choice of the activity and the repetition of the exercise, starting from the simple and moving towards greater levels of complexity, boys and girls gradually come to master the concepts of mathematical calculation.

During the meeting we will reflect on Maria Montessori's educational approach, on the characteristics of Montessori materials and on how to use them with boys and girls.

Translating Children's Literature: Juggling Between Boundaries

HALL 30
Translators Café

Children's literature has its specific demands even in its mother tongue, let alone translation. Some aspects of it do not even come to the surface unless translated. The fine balance between a work of art and a work of edification has to be maintained not only in language, but also in all aspects of transporting the original ideas into another culture. From simple things - will a donut become a Krapfen - to complex subjects such as societal norms and political stances. How much of it is left to the discretion of the translator, and how much of it is the product of various interventions in the text? The panelists will discuss various practices around Europe, and try to shed some light on the art and acrobatics of translating for children.

This workshop aims to come up with some ideas for these activities that stimulate imagination and enable readers to have a fun experience. Each participant will choose a book out of 3 titles of different non-fiction genres (astronomy, animals, plants) and create a project that can be proposed to the editor. Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference - Children’s Literature: The language and the culture

Sala Ouverture
Services Centre - Wing D

The role of translation is not limited to transferring a word from one language to its corresponding meaning in another language. Rather, it is an educational process that enriches language and thought, and contributes to enriching vocabulary and terminology.

Translating children's literature is one of the most challenging fields of translation both linguistically and culturally. At the Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference, in its 9th edition, many issues related to this topic will be discussed with the participation of many translators, specialists and publishers in this field.

It is worth noting that the Abu Dhabi International Translation Conference took a global turn two years ago, by organizing it in international forums to accompany international book fairs. The first international session of the conference was in Mainz, Germany, in conjunction with the Frankfurt International Book Fair, and this year in Bologna on the sidelines of Bologna Children's Book Fair, in line with the main objective of this exhibition.

This 9th conference will encompass 4 discussions: 1- Who/what promotes the translation of children books? 2- What is lost in translation? The fine line between translation, rewriting and adaptation. 3- Women in Translation: what are the challenges? 4- Arabic Children’s Books travelling the world.

Born to Read: Childhood and Readings on the Borders

Sala Bolero

Encouraging reading from early childhood, especially in under-privileged communities, is a proven way of forming life-long readers and reading families. Based on the experience of the Nati per leggere Project and its transfer to Parelheiros, a peripheral neighborhood in São Paulo, Brazil, passing through the peripheral communities of Capetown, and the project promoted by the Ministry of Culture of Croatia, this session reflects on the importance of promoting reading in disadvantaged children. A brief and ludic workshop consisting of an exercise of juxtaposition of techniques and preexisting elements to make illustrations. By revisiting the medieval tradition of a bestiary, we will take letters, printed with movable types, and create our own fantasy animals. The bold types of the wooden letterpress letters are the basis for creating our beasts. Through collage experimentation, the letters of the alphabet may also be considered as shapes and forms on the page, which leads to reading and observing letters in different ways.

Ukrainian Illustration: Experiencing the War

HALL 30
The Illustrators Survival Corner - Masterclass Area

Art has always been a medium for communicating ideas, self-expression, protest, and solidarity. Amidst Russia’s war in Ukraine, illustration became a powerful tool that helps Ukrainians to spread the truth about what’s happening in their country, to share their emotions and stories with the world. So what it’s like to live through war? How can artwork become an instrument or even a weapon? How to keep working while in danger? What is the role of creators today? And what it’s like to be Ukrainian? These are the questions the panel, made up offamous prize-winning Ukrainian illustrators, will answer.

Drawing death. Masterclass with Chiara Rapaccini

HALL 30
The Illustrators Survival Corner - Masterclass Area

Chiara Rapaccini wants to share her experience as an illustration teacher at the European Institute of Design in Rome and in Japan. A meeting of minds, hearts and artistic commitment that gives excellent results. The starting question is: How do you feel right now? A seemingly simple question that few adults ask young people. What are your fears, problems, performance anxieties? After a brainstorming session, students each freely tell their own story and decide how to deal with it. The results are surprising. The more they talk about themselves, the better they write and draw. This year's lesson addresses one of the taboos of contemporary societies: death. Death, in the Covid-19 era, has been emphasized and hidden at the same time. Students have experienced a dark time that has led many to be depressed, anxious, and self-harming. It is the duty of teachers and schools, in addition to teaching technique-especially in an art school-to make sure we are prepared to listen and understand.

Presentation of books Andrej Sakharov. The man who was not afraid and Sidi i smotri (Sit down and watch)

«Today we have the duty to fight for every single person, against every injustice and violation of human rights: a large part of our future will depend on this.» Andrei Sakharov

A meeting between Russian and Italian publishers. Irina Balakhonova (Samokat), Yuri Garrett and Tatiana Pepe (Caissa Italia), assisted by Giulia De Florio (Memorial Italia), talk about two titles that we will soon be able to read in Italian. The first is a popular graphic novel on the dissident figure of Andrej Sakharov, Nobel Peace Prize 1975, physicist and man who marked the history of the twentieth century; the second is a young adult novel, written in the languages of today's youth, which tells the story of the escape from war through the eyes and emotions of a teenager. Illustrations for Italo Calvino. Published and unpublished masterpieces for young readers' books

Services Centre
Illustrators Café

Italo Calvino loved and knew very well the history of Italian illustration. He would certainly have been pleased with BCBF's tribute to him one hundred years after his birth with the exhibition and contest "Eccellenze Italiane. Figures for Italo Calvino". Visual culture is an important aspect of cultural, aesthetic, imaginative education. Promoting it, stimulating it, making it accessible to children is a commitment.

BCBF dedicates a meeting to the great author and Italian illustration, together with established artists who have interpreted his texts, and some of the contest winners, who have offered their personal vision of the characters, places and suggestions of Calvino's novels.

IBBY European Regional Conference: "Finding a safe home in books"

Sala Notturno
Services Centre - Wing D

Every child has the right to a safe home. Yet, children all over the world often face moments of doubt, insecurity, fear, loss or threat. This is where the power of stories comes in, because books can offer shelter, give hope and create awareness. Stories have the potential to show you that you are not alone, and that others are in the same situation. Books can offer ideas and scenarios that are beyond our own imagination, showing us a different and, perhaps, a better world. Because IBBY is committed to the right of every child to become a reader – we want our third European Regional Conference to send out a signal of hope in these challenging times. Our keynote speaker, the child and youth psychiatrist Winny Ang, will highlight the importance of stories for a child’s development and personal happiness. Furthermore, successful projects from France, Germany, Ireland and Slovenia will provide inspiration for all professionals in children's literature. And, of course, the programme will feature enthusiastic creators of books: Fabio Geda, Andriy Lesiv and Romana Romanyshin, Margaret Anne Suggs and Edward van de Vendel. The broad range and potential of children's literature is waiting for you!
